well i've been talking with the admin at my school and they finally said they would let my band play at least an hour at one of the dances near the end of the year. we have quite a bit of time to rehearse, but we need some suggestions for danceable songs. any ideas?
    thanks

What do the kids at your school like to dance to? I know where I went to high school (I haven't gone to any dances in college, I only went to them in high school, and rarely at that) everyone danced to slower songs. It was either that or two-stepping to upbeat country, yep we's Texans I reckon'. Although the DJ would play "light, non-threatening, curse free" rap (like Will Smith, there's no way a DJ could get away with any song that cursed, unless it was barely audible) it wasn't as popular dancing wise as the slow stuff. Let us know more about the audience you'll be playing to and we can be more helpful.

Just don't play the Titanic song, I beg you.

Listen to the radio. Better yet, ask around what people would like to dance to.

kids at my school like many different types of music.
fast hip-hop songs, songs you can mosh to, and slow songs are all pretty popular.

sorry for being impatient...its just i've been sitting at this computer all day cuz i'm bored and TB is so addicting.

There were tons of great dance tune when I was in college in 88-91.

There was one Terrence Trent Darby song but I can't remember the title. Also, much Bobby Brown.

    I'm so old.

This is especially cool for the bass player as it is one easy pattern that you repeat over and over for 3-4 minutes. It sounds cool so people dig what you are doing. And since it is a mindlessly repeating pattern, you can spy chicks in the crowd and be a poser and make guitar player faces and stuff. I always had a ton of fun playing that song.

And if you are going to play a dance, you need to learn some ballads. You can't squeeze your honey to RATM.

  10. Check out the playlist on our website. Pretty much everything we play is upbeat. Much of it is probably a bit old for you (sad but true :( )............ but we do stuff by Supergrass, Oasis, Blur ......... then Weezer and Wheatus are two great more recent bands. Also the Offspring, but I guess their lyrics may be a bit too dodgy. Often these bass lines are fairly simple too.

  11. Well, we gigged last Thursday, and one of the covers that we did was 'The Timewarp' - that usually gets them dancing........ Mind you, maybe the school wouldn't approve of 'pelvic thrusts'!!!!
