Has anyone else here ever heard a song that they only listen to because of the bassline? For me, it's this one: Sugarcubes - Birthday - YouTube
I'll probably catch hell for this, but here goes: The Cure - Out of This World (Berlin Trilogy Tour) - YouTube I actually really like The Cure, I just find this particular song to be on the weaker side of their catalog. The bassline, however, is pure genius. It's not particularly complicated, but it carries the song to the point that you could strip it down to vocals, bass, and drums and it would be instantly recognizable. This, IMHO, is what Simon Gallup has always excelled at!!
I like Queen's first four albums quite a lot, but after A Night at the Opera I turn off. You're My Best Friend is probably my least favourite song off the album, I think it's almost cringeworthy (maybe if it were slightly more subtle lyrically... but I guess Queen were never really subtle). However, I love the bassline, it's so tasteful and melodic. Queen - You're My Best Friend - YouTube
Ironically, I love that tune...and yet I don't think I ever noticed the bassline! Yep, that'd definitely be one of the top contenders! This is the one that first came to my mind: "Groove Is In The Heart" - Deee Lite
"Had to" learn this one when I was in a cover band. Didn't like the song much but I think the bassline is a simple kind of cool. Edie Brickell & New Bohemians - What I Am - YouTube
Rock Your Body -- Justin Timberlake I'm almost embarrassed to admit this one. This bass line is simple and repetitive, but I love the groove. I can't help but move to this.
Anything from the early REM catalogue. I'm not a pick player, but Mike Mills bass work on their first 4 albums is, for the most part, fast and melodic.
+1 on Silly Love Song It's the quintessential silly pop song with a kickin' bass line Here is my nomination for oldie tunes that are fun for a bass player but silly for the rest of the band: More Today than Yesterday, Spiral Starecase Green Eyed Lady, Sugarloaf
Great bass lines, also happen to like both songs. [AGE_ALERT] Grew up hearing both of them [/AGE_ALERT]
No. Excluding songs that I have to learn for a cover band, if I don't like a song I will not listen to it no matter how good the bass line is.
You Oughta Know - Alanis. Flea. That's the only Alanis song I've ever remotely cared for, and that's really the only reason.
That bass riff originally came from this tune by Herbie Hancock. Herbie Hancock - Bring down The Birds - YouTube
I love playing that tune! Just an incredibly fun, awesome bassline...if you can get in the pocket with a drummer who knows how to make rock roll, that tune is a roller-coaster ride of good times.
