For me, recently it's BTO "You ain't seen nothin yet". That song is soooo played IMO, I change the station if it comes on the radio but, I just started playing it and I can't stop! DAMN!
"Heartbreaker" by Pat Benatar. I heard that on the radio so much when I was growing up that I simply cannot hear it anymore. However, it's a fun one to play, and it rocks out pretty easily. It's easy to learn and fun to break out at random moments when you're supposed to be acting more hard core or something.
Ha. Those songs get played over and over and over for decades for the very same reasons you enjoy playing them.
There are a lot of those songs I'd rather hear live under those sorts of circumstances rather than on the radio. One band I saw did a great version of "9 To 5" with a female singer. It sounded like Motorhead if Lemmy was a girl.
A recent one for me is "Authority Song" by John Mellencamp. I'd ordinarily change the station at the first hint of any Mellencamp song, but I've started playing this one with one of my hobby bands and having a blast playing it. Same basic line repeated over and over and over, but fun (and a good workout) if you keep it rocking hard.
Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry. I never played it in a band until this year. It's fun to play for a bass player; but, I have heard it on the radio more times than I care to listen to it anymore.
Oh god! Not only has that been played to death but we have a girl in the office who sings in a band and we had to listen to that song over and over and over again while she was learning it.
Sounds odd, but most of the covers my main band plays. I've never made it a secret that my ears don't like Dream Theater (mostly because of Labrie, but I just don't find them enjoyable musically, either), but HOLY F%^& are they FUN to play. Now the Rush, Yes, Zappa and other stuff is awesome on the ears and the fingers.
She Sells Sanctuary. I don't know that I'd say it's an auto-dump tune, but it's tough to drive to However, It's just kick ass to play. Do these revelations make you wonder what the crowd you play them for thinks? They don't get the "joy" of playing... :/
I'm a massive Thin Lizzy fan but tap out when "The Boys Are Back In Town" comes on the radio. Playing it is super fun though.
I hear you Gluvhand. With such a great catalog of songs to choose from, why do they always play that ONE?
Sweet Child O' Mine Hate that song with a passion, but it's fun to play and gets all the girls up and jiggling around!
Rock Lobster - when I listen to it I can't help thinking *** is this and why has it gone on for soooo long? But when I play it I'm like this is the greatest, let's keep it going.
