Hello! Can finally afford a sound system and am looking at the Bose 500 and matching sub. Bar depth (under 6in) and minimal wires are musts. I will probably play more music over it than movies. Cost around $900. Any experience with this or something similar? Is any other bar/sub combo simply amazing? I've looked at Polk/Klipsch/Samsung (Harmon Kardon essentially I believe). Any others? I mainly don't want something mediocre for music or a weak sub I will regret. Those are my biggest unknowns. Also, smallish room and 46in LED, so I don't need anything too crazy. Thanks in advance for any help.
I have minimal experience, but I can vouch for Bose and Yamaha. On our TV is a Yamaha soundbar with little 4" woofers, I'm not sure HOW it does it, but I can play bass guitar over that & it sounds good. The Bose I have are meant to be PC speakers, but their bass response is quite good as well, & actually sound a tiny bit better than the Yamaha soundbar, for bass guitar. However, I think that might be a thing with the processing that the signal goes through in the TV before it hits the soundbar. I've compared them with "regular" compressed Music & they sound the same, in fact if I were blindfolded I couldn't tell them apart! My advice is to pay attention to the inputs on whatever you buy, make sure there's enough & the kind you can use. As good as mine sounds, I was figuratively blown away by some of the systems I heard at Best-Buy! However, I believe the majority of the difference is actually in the Source, because I'm usually watching "regular" HD broadcasts at home, & surely they have a Blu-Ray playing at Best-Buy with some super hi-def audio track (many channels).
Hmm... Well until my TV dies I'll be using the optical connection (think it's my only option). Haven't had one of those since minidiscs were a thing, but I assume it would be good enough for 2.1 ya?
I keep reading good things about this company's products (no affiliation, although I do own a Sanus Swiveling TV Stand - different manufacturer - purchased through them). https://www.sonos.com/en-us/home
Dang that does look nice. Also heard good things about Sonos, but don't know anybody with one, and it would have to be worth $650 better than the Bose. Not off the table though. Thanks.
Our TV room has - Sonos Playbase (TV sits atop it) Sonos Sub (shakes the whole house) 2ea Sonos Play 3s as "surrounds" My smaller music room- Playbeam 2ea Play 1s as "surrounds" No wires except the 120VAC cord.
Bose makes good stuff..but a tad overpriced. Plus if you get a bose subwoofer make sure it has a volume and crossover on the box. I had a bose home theater system and it sounded really good...except...the stupid subwoofer rumbled all the time. Drove me nuts so I got rid of it. Any decent soundbar with subwoofer made these days will sound excellent. Just make sure the subwoofer has the 2 controls.

If I had my druthers I'd get a Denon/Klipsch. Unfortunately, drilling/patching/painting the wall is not an option. I have room for a <6in deep bar and a Bluetooth woofer. Should've gotten speakers in the ceiling/floor when remodeling. My options are limited, hence "what's better than Bose 500 bar/sub?" Price/quality looking good but I am patient.
Nm I'm just gonna go with the Bose 500 Bar/Sub. If it sucks maybe I can go with the Bose 700 series? Hope it works! Thanks for the help. Will update.
Got/setup. With only a phone I had some update issues, but nothing big. For my needs this combo is perfect. Not cheap but perfect.
Bose stuff is EQ'd strange. It is heavily processed and Bose cuts a couple key frequency areas in the musical range on their speakers.
Can you link a song that is a good example? I have Shure earbuds and JBL headphones to a/b. For a lot of music and for movies it is working well. But honestly I can return them so lemme know if there is a better answer.
Um, no I don't have a song... just do a little exploration on audio forums. I was always under the assumption that Bose's reputation was common knowledge. They're like Beats by Dre, pure marketing hype and false EQ curves that sound "good" to the layperson. But there is a lot missing.
I'll be the first to admit that some songs don't really fit between a small sub and a soundbar. There are plenty of musical bass frequencies that just disappear, but some things I'm comparing to, say, subs in a car (Three 6 Mafia - Late Night Tip is night/day). Tends to have only punch and no range, if that makes sense. Still, watched Heat and The Town and it sure beats Samsun TV speakers. If i had more options I would have done it different, but honestly the Bose 500 thingy is a pretty good compromise. Did i pay for Alexa support? Ya. Probably wasted a few hundred on that crap. Not a big deal.
really depends on what you're looking for. I had the full ride Denon receiver and 7.1 high end polk speakers. Hardly used it. Plus it was always too loud for the wife. By the time I got it where she said it was ok, I might as well have had just the TV speakers on. I bought a top rated middle of the road vizio sound bar with wireless sub and rear satellite speakers. I only use it for movies and TV Concerts, but now we're both happy and now I only rarely get "turn that damn thing down!"
Bose does their own thing with frequency response, and in general I'm not a fan. While listening to almost any Bose system over time, I keep discovering that there are frequencies which should be reproduced but which I'm not hearing. Denon and Klipsch are always good options.
