What song do you use to check the sound system? If you don't use a recorded song, what song does the band play?

I use Platinum Blonde's "It Doesn't Really Matter". My rational is:

    1) It is has a strong bass line to test the bass response
    2) High vocals to test the treble.
    3) Clear drums.
    4) I know the song well :p

  2. Whatever the first song is in the set for that service.

Of course, I'm mixing a church band. We don't even really do a "sound check".

  3. Stars and stripes is well known and full spectrum

We have our own soundcheck song that one of my bandmates wrote. Although, I've found places here tend to do soundcheck by individual instruments more than the entire band at the same time, so we haven't had the need to do our soundcheck song. However, we still play it at rehearsals as a warm-up.

:D I am sure the sound guy has the levels down.

As our sound setup has gotten trickier and trickier (more equipment and more volume :( ) we has stopped doing a sound check too.

I'm not sure that "Stars and Stripes" would go over that well in Canada :p

If I'm mixing for a band, I'll try to play stuff similar to the bands set, but not the same songs.

However, if I'm sound checking a system and there's no one around, there some songs that usually end up being played:
Dire Straits - Money for Nothing
Flim & the BB's - Tricycle (the dynamic range is astounding)
    Sub Focus - Rock It
    Pink Floyd - Time
    MSTRKRFT - Beards Again
    Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Liquid Stranger - Fist of Fury
the list goes on and on...
