Sound from American Jag eh..

I just acquired a 2014 American Stand Jaguar bass.
Cool look, very interesting bass.. however.
Aside from not being into the slim J neck, the sound of it is not doing it so much.
Being a P guy, I find this Jag sounds really good but loses note definition esp when playing higher up. Serial mode is even worse. Compared to my main P it doesn't come close.. Any ideas why? Would changing the pickups help iye?
On a side note, I am used to flats (TI and LB) and this bass I left with rounds.
