Who can tell me how the bassists from these new bands get the bottom notes of their bass to sound like a piano? It's a sound I'm looking for but can't seem to match exactly!

New chrome roundwounds and a good bass. A little chorus might help, or maybe even a touch of octave. Maybe it's an 8- or 12-string bass. Who the hell knows?

Switch to the bridge pickup (if you don't have one, forget trying to get this tone). Taperwound strings will also help.

If all else fails, have the piano player double your line. (You'd be amazed how many of the recordings you're talking about use this technique.)
