In uncertain times, it is good to know you that have something to participate in that is certain, building basses in the Luthier’s corner!

On March 26th 2020, a build off challenge was issued here in the Luthiers Corner.

The theme was “Build em if you got em”.

This asks the builders to do whatever it takes to build a bass. It could be made from parts, it could be completing a stalled build, building something from scratch, or anything in between. A Free For All so to speak.

Due to the large number entries, we started our voting with an elimination round.
The elimination round is complete and we are moving on to the “Finals” round of voting.

Please review each of the builders pages listed in the links below.

You have 5 votes to select your favorites.

ATTENTION BUILDERS: Please don’t vote for yourself. Vote for your fellow builders. Let them know you appreciate their efforts.

The voting will remain open until Sunday, July 12th, 2PM (-6 GMT)

    Thank You

Man, it's WAY harder, even with 5 chances to vote when these are stacked up like this! I'm shocked I ended up on this list, next to some insane designs and flawless craftsmanship. Its been great to be a part of this, especially at a time when the world's been turned upside down. Congrats to all the builders and thank you

  4. Yeah, voting is no joke with this many options, even with 5 votes to spend! I do wanna say congrats in advance to whoever takes the cake and thanks to @Scoops for putting this on :)

Would it be out of line to give a special shout out to the one out of the 5 votes I cast that was my favorite?

    I hope not!

Nagromicon.... holy cow man. That is a work of art my friend. Bravo!

An extra special shout out to Ripthorn with all the woods and all the colors. Yeah, I drooled . . .

Everyone else, fantastic job, truly. No losers here.

Huge props to everyone who submitted a build. It's an enormous amount of work and commitment to get all the way to the end of a build. Blood, sweat and tears, literally. (And that's not counting wetting yourself or pooping a little during any close-call router-related incidents.)

If you've never built before and are interested, or are on the fence, I can't recommend it enough. See you next time! :woot:

  9. I just wanna say all these builds are amazing, it was hard to choose, even with 5 votes! I really hope that there are more of these competitions that are more entry level friendly, I’d really love to participate next time!

I just learned about this. Am I still on time to submit a build I finished just 3 days ago?

  12. Unfortunately not, I was in the same boat! I just finished a build in April that I could've entered, but the deadline was June 21st :rollno:

There's almost always a wide field - nothing wrong with assembling purchased parts for example, but in the Winter Build Off, there's usually a theme that is followed. As long as it fits the theme, everyone and everything is invited. "Entry-level" builders tend to get the largest community support. :D

I think it's too late for a submission to this particular build off, but I can practically guarantee that everyone here wants to see it. :D Even though it won't make it into this build off, please put it into a build thread and post it up in the Luthier's Corner anyway! :woot:

  15. That's good to know! I'm kinda new, so I've never seen a winter build off before, but it sounded kind of intimidating from what I saw. But now that I know, hopefully I'll be able to participate! Just gotta start saving up for parts, and a few tools I don't have haha.

I was despairing that I couldn't pick the 3 I like best, then I remembered we got 5 votes! Didn't make it much easier...

Love 'em; all beautiful instruments! I really admire the eye for detail on all of these basses. If I built a bass it would probably end up looking like that car that Homer Simpson designed...

    There will be more competitions!

As @Beej has indicated, we have a Winter Build Off, which is theme based. Anybody can join! Young and old, skilled and unskilled alike.
We will be doing the Free For All Build Off every spring! Anything Goes!

@itmeyaboi is not the first to call for a more entry level friendly category
I get it, as a noob, and I look at the list and ask, why would I want to enter? I'll get my ass kicked!

So I put this question out to the group.
What would be an effective way of dealing with this?

Is a FFA the place for entry level sills?
Do we create a separate category for entry level sills?
Do entry level sills learn through the school of hard knocks via WBO?
Will Mothman take an entry level skills builder under his wing?

    Thoughts/comments please

  20. Personally I think the FFA would be a great place for entry level skills! I would’ve entered if I had seen it by the deadline. The things I would avoid for an entry build off would be building a neck or body from scratch. I feel like that’s the one thing that someone who hasn’t been doing this for a while wouldn’t be equipped to do, just because it requires so many expensive tools and pretty extensive knowledge and experience.
