So I was looking through the winter NAMM gallery of Spector basses and it occurred to me that the USA Spectors don't really get a lot of love here on TB for being a really nice handmade bass from one of the oldest and most respected builders in the world.... you see TONS of top players using them and every year they win one of the 'best in show' type awards at the trade shows... Do you guys think the prestige of the USA line has been diluted by the imports? You see the inexpensive Korean imports EVERYWHERE and the Euro versions are REALLY nice basses ... I've played a couple and they well surpassed most other basses in their respective price range in terms of build quality and feel... but the USA ones just blow me away with the solid AAAA flame or quilt bodies (not just a 1/4" top). What d'ya'll think?
I have an import myself. Would I love a USA? You're damn right I would. The pictures I've seen look incredible. Just a little out of my budget though.......maybe if I sell one of my kids though......
I'm getting back on the Spector wagon after having been off for 16 or 17 years. I wish I had never let my beautiful quilted maple top NS-5 go although the Ken Smith I bought was no joke! As many of you may have read, I'm picking a a Rebop in a few weeks, and can barely wait.
I actually really like Spector basses but I think they are priced to high. At 4k, that is simply not worth the price of the bass to me. Music Man basses sell on average about half that cost or less. In the $1,500.00 - $2,000.00 price range and the quality is just as good if not better. Most of the models such as the Bongo's, Big Al's and Reflexes are more versatile and Music Man does some pretty cool things every year with a limited number of basses. With the Spectors, I would love to buy a Legend 4 Classic in a Holoflash finish but I just can't justify spending that kind if cash on one bass. I love the Holoflash finish though. I think it is one of the best of any basses out there.
I don't know, OP. One of the first things I noticed about this board is the love-affair for the USA Spectors. Many of members have personal relationships with Stuart Spector and his crew! I think that if you love hand-crafted Spectors, this forum will allow you to make many friends.
30 club threads of Love..... Thats plenty love if you ask me..... http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/spector%AE-club-part-30-a-869543/
You make the same argument about all low production, handmade basses. Either a boutique is worth to you or it isn't.
Spectors are great instruments. While it may not be a good old fashioned love fest for them here on TB, it's pretty close. The only negative seems to be "gee, they cost too much." I also remember a few people who weren't crazy about the tone pump preamp. Overall, though, it seems TBers are really positive about them thar' Spectors.
cheap spectors are still pretty good basses for what you get for the $. the usa is a pinnacle of the basses. the forte is a usa bass and from what some of the guys on the thread say, they are phenomenal also. they are just a little more affordable because of the stripping down of some of the things they dont have than the custom made ones. but from what the guys say, it's not much to complain about. check out the thread some day and join in with a spector.
I'll put my USA Spector up against anything. It's that good. Why would someone compare a production line cookie cutter bass like a Music Man to a handbuilt boutique bass like a Spector? Plus, USA Spectors can be had for around $2000 on the used market all day long. Look in the classifieds here. I won't divulge how much I paid for mine, but let's just say it was less than a Music Man.
Is it really? If that is the case, then I may eventually buy one one day. All of the Spectors I have seen have been selling in the 4k ballpark. Like I said, I like the basses but with my thinking being they were that much, I was having a hard time justifying the buy but if they sell them in the price range you mentioned, that is awesome then!
