Does the oil finish that Spector uses provide sufficient protection to the wood or are you better off with a high gloss type finish. I like the feel of the oil but certain times of the year the temp/humidity here can really affect the neck on a bass and I'm wondering if the neck would be more stable with the high gloss finish?

  2. The oil finishes are fine as long as you maintain them. I've seen a couple of used oil finish basses that were obviously neglected because the wood looked very dry and the bass felt rather light. Of course, the dried out wood also changed the sound.

In addition to upkeep, always wash your hands before handling an oiled instrument. I've seen many that have been neglected with dirt and body oils soaking into the wood. Not a pretty sight and you would think that if you've spent that much money on an instrument, you'd want to keep it in great shape.
