A friend of mine has what he believes is a 80's Spector. The case says Spector with the Kramer logo under it. It was supposedly owned by Phil Soussan from Ozzy's band. It's a 5 string as well. We can't find a serial number on it and the back of the headstock is blank. Should there be a serial number on this bass or would it be hidden somewhere. We have not taken it apart to find one yet. I would like to buy this bass from him, but I want to know what it really is before I make him an offer. Thanks
If it is as you describe it... it's a very rare bass indeed. A Kramer Spector NS-5 .. I'm sure someone here knows better than i, but try unscrewing the back plate.. The serial of my Kramer Spector NS-2 is in there written with a red sharpie )))
if it's a transparent finish get the bass in some very good lighting and check the back of the headstock. I have a Kramer era ns2 and the serial is almost impossible to see, but it's there. a Kramer era ns5 is a very cool bass. if you can get pics, post them in the spector owners thread.
Its a white bass. Im not sure if its a ns5, just assuming it is. Heres a picture of the back of the head stock.
1975-1985 Brooklyn era was engraved into the side of the bridge or written inside the control cavity. 1985-1990 Kramer era was stamped in ink on the back of headstock and difficult to read (some faded). 1991-1998 SSD era Stuart Spector signed these on the back of the headstock (they have the SSD logo on front). 1998-present Stuart Spector still signs each bass on the back of the headstock. If your bass is a transition bass between the Brooklyn and Kramer eras check the bridge and control cavity for numbers, if it was built in the Kramer plant you could have the ink stamp on the back of the headstock which has faded. Check under the truss rod cover. The hand written serial number may be under there. That's where it is for my 1986 Kramer/Spector NS-2. Oh and btw, if I were you, I'd buy that bass ASAP. They are quite rare, VERY sought after and VERY valuable from Spector collector's POV, especially in that color. There's a pic of a couple of similar era basses from Todd Cooke's collection at the bottom of this page: http://spectorworld.com/kspector.htm A big +1 on following Torn's advice about emailing PJ at Spector. He will have all the answers you need to make your decision.
The cool thing is that he doesn't have it on the market. He just has it in his basement and keeps telling me that its a shame its not getting played. He bought it in 2007 for $3000. I'm just not sure how to value it, as he's probably not sure either. He's not a bass player, he's a guitar player who's into high end PRS stuff. He's not an idiot though, but he might make me a deal.
I owned this bass for a little while. It is what you were told. I bought it from GC over 10 years ago used. I didn't like it at the time and returned it. Then I believe a Spector collector named Gene from Florida bought it. It is very rare. Contact PJ at Spector. He will confirm it. I would buy it. You can always resell it and make a profit. Heck I might even buy it from you. If you have any questions pm me. I think I still have pics of it in my book of basses.
I was told that there was a pair of them at the time and a friend of mine bought this one. This is in Michigan.
There are only around 70 80's Spector NS 5 strings made I doubt there are 2 white identical white ones the one you are looking at was the one I owned it had no serial # on the back of the headstock and the salesman I bought it from at GC did tell me Randy owned it
