I'm thinking of getting a spector NS2000Q-5 .. but after finding out that the pickups are passive I'm not so sure. I haven't had a chance to play it through an amp yet. Anyway, I own a samick 5 - artist series.. it really sucks but it has active pickups. I'm not really a fan of the passive sound. do you think the spector would still sound better ? I'd go play the spector through an amp but it's in a different city so I have to ask here.

if you want active you can always upgrade later.

    and keep in mind that:

    Active doesn't mean GOOD
    Passive doesn't mean BAD

    it's quality that matters.

Well, the bass comes with passive EMG-HZ pickups but it has an active EMG BTS 9V pre amp that make the bass active. IMO, the bass sounds GREAT!!!!

It still has an active preamp you know. Many recognized companies combine passive pickups with active electronics.

It's a pretty nice bass, IME. Feels good.

ok, maybe my samick is the same way ... is there anywhere I can read about preamps and active pickups etc so I can get a full understanding of what's going on ?

You can look in the "Pick-Up" section of TalkBass.
