I've read a few people praise spirocore orchestral strings. I don't understand what these are. Are they just the next thicker gauge up from weichs? How is the sound different from weichs? How much harder to play are they?

orchs and weichs differ not so much in guage as tension. orchs are higher tension (and relatively high compared to most strings). the weichs have a 'snap' and decay to the pizz sound that many players perceive as gut-like. still, the sustain is certainly that of a ringy steel string. the orchs have a more resonant punch and longer sustain, and to many ears, a tinnier overall tone.

both varieties are long-lasting and are used ubiquitously in the jazz (etc.) world.
