Hey hive mind. I really love the resonant depth, power and ping of EP mediums, but I’m really missing the focus, harmonic content and especially the higher dynamic ceiling of my trusty Spiro mediums. Is there a string out there that has a combo of those elements? Preferably lower tension. About 50/50 arco & pizz. TIA!

To my ears I think what I’m looking for is a darker sounding spirocore.

In all seriousness - play the Spiros until they really break in. They will darken continually over time. Weichs (S42W) would be worth a shot to see if they respond better on your bass or sound better to you after the initial break in.

Well, OP called them his "trusty Spiro mediums" ... implying to me that they were broken in.

Superflexibles, broken in, might fit the bill.

Good point. If the OPs reference point is a well-used set of Spiros, perhaps SFs would be a good set to try.

  7. A newer set of EP mediums helps with that all as well. They die ugly in my experience.

That's what I found in Dominants, but lower tension they are not. On paper, they might look like it, but they are stiffer than Spiros. I really love the sound, though.

Temperas by Gerold Genssler. They´ve now settled down on my bass after 5 weeks and they really seem to check all the boxes of arco/pizz/clear/deep/tension/hybrid. I´m impressed.

almost there with the Perpetuals but they are a bright string on some basses (mine specifically). But i think they're a good mix between evahs and sprios. For years I would switch between spiro mediums and evah weich until the perpetuals came out and found them to be perfect for my needs.

I’ve been looking into these. Can you expand on what you think about them?

Seconded. They are slightly brighter EP's pretty much.
