The only thing I can think of would be to take an ohm meter to the pot and make sure it's really zeroing out, otherwise it may be some bleedthough. If you aren't satisfied with the results of that, I'd ask your question as a new thread over in the Pickups & Electronics forum.

I have the magnet mod and (just verified) the bass is totally silent with both volume controls turned off. I suspect you either have a bad volume pot or something is incorrectly wired. IME the added magnet is not the cause of your stated issue. I'd start by taking the control plate off and making sure you don't have any bad / loose connections or extra bits of wire shorting something out.

My Club application :P

I got myself a Jag SS just after the new year. This is my first Bass guitar though I have been playing a six string Guitar for many years.

Why did I get one? I am tired of trying to program bass parts for tunes I write. I have had the bass for a few weeks and, overall I am very happy with it. I'm not a Bass player but I am liking how it feels and plays.

Hello all, I have been reading through all of the posts from part one to three, mainly looking for the answers to a few questions that I have.

I have found most of the answers I was looking for :)

There is one that eludes me. I have read many discussions about string choices but there is often information missing from the answers that makes it difficult to take the advice on board, namely what types of music the various string types are being used for by the posters.

The tuning I am going to use will be: DADG

I will probably be playing with a pick.

The music I will using my bass for: Prog Rock, Hard Rock, Hi gain metal. The strings need to have enough tension so I can double guitar riffs tightly when the need arises. (Tension on the low D especially important)

I dont mind a lack of low end so much as I will not be playing live, through an amp or in any kind of band situation just straight into my interface then into my DAW. There are plenty of things that can be done in my DAW to bolster the low end if required.

Is there anyone here playing similar types of music? If so, what is your preferred string choice?

Continuing on this ilk I had the bass lying flat, measuring the nut height of the strings, so I thought I'd test the volume pots again, turned them down and they were dead silent. Made me think the cable I'd used on stage was bad, so I grabbed the bass went to the other room, hooked it up snd there it was, sound! Quickly grabbing the short one I'd used in the work room to verify, plugged in and... sound???? Worked out, it didn't matter the cable, bass lying flat, silent. Bass in playing position, sound.

As to strings, my arthritic hands require lower tension, so I've tried a lot. Currently I'm using roto tapes. Chromes were much higher tension, and much brighter than you'd think for flats.

Yea, I think the others are right, check the electronics to make sure everything's solid and not touching where it shouldn't.

The best I can do for you is that I study Chris Squire's work, among other things. I use D'addario round wound lights, that's all I could find locally at the time but I was pleased at how well they work for Yes. I really don't find the bottom end lacking on this bass, but then I've totally replaced all the electronics at this point. I recall that others have found that the Jag SS can keep up with the 34" scale bretheren. I'm sure there are club members that will correct me if they feel I'm wrong.

The thing that I found that really caused the sound to blossom was when I put 500k pots in it. These things are fun and easy to mod, so it may be worth you while to experement, if you have time. ;)

I have decided to try a set of rotosounds, though I am struggling to find a set that is 55-110, do you buy them as singles or as a set?

As for mods: I am going for these for the pickup pots: Invalid Link Removed, I am not sure if also switching out the tone pot is worth it or not but if I decide to I will use one of the above.

Anyone got any experience of those particular pots, or a better alternative?

Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner.

Not sure what had happened to it, but when I took the the plate off, and held the plate in playing position, the grounding lugs on one of the vol pots looked very close to the others, and the wire there had some gap between the insulation and the lug. In moving the pickup to put the magnet in place, I've obviously changed the positioning of the wires, causing the wires to connect with the other lug when in playing position. Slight tweak to that lug and it's ready to go, with no more volume issues.
