Anyone know or have good guess as to what size the frets are on these little guys? I love the small-sized frets on my MusicMaster, and my other main bass has insanely huge frets which I'm realizing I really don't like. I'm assuming the frets on my MusicMaster are pretty worn down - based on what I'm seeing on my micrometer it looks like about .090" width by .040" height - but I'd like to find a 34" scale neck with similar frets to put on my other bass. Thanks friends!

Hi. Great Forum. Count me in as a member. I bought my Vista MM brand new around 1999 I think. Its the sonic blue/surf green version. Ive always loved the punchy sound I get. I use to use it live occasionally even though I'd sometime get a little 60 cycle hum through the sound system. I always felt the build quality was a little shoddy on mine due to the poor fret setting and "loosey-goosey" tuners - but the sound was so good it was like - who cares!
Question: I would like to correct the neck dive I experience and get some higher quality tuners (machine heads) Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In my experience, I put one of these on the strap for my two Musicmasters and on my Gretsch basses. It seemed to help by "gripping" on your shoulder. That's been my experience anyway.

  5. I have a couple thoughts. First, I couldn’t really hear much out of the ordinary on the recordings due to your playing notes so rapidly. If you recorded some sutained notes that might be more helpful. Second, (forgive me for not knowing your skill level; I’m going to make an assumption that you’re not very experienced with changing strings as you said this is the first bass you’ve owned) is it possible that you may have installed the new strings poorly? I have several string through and regular bridges and the string through can be a bit tricky sometimes to install without getting a twist in the string. Third, though less likely, it’s possible that your new strings are a dud set (I’ve had a few bad strings straight out of the package). Hopefully you can clear up a couple of those thoughts.

We're getting there. Slowly, but surely. Grab another nut for the input jack, knobs back on and she'll be ready to go.

Thanks for the advice. I think my preference is to kill to birds with one stone by improving the balance of the bass and improving the tuners. I was wondering if anybody has ever swapped out the original tuners for something different. So far the only tuners that look like they would do the job (and fit) are the USA Hipshot Ultralite tuners. Love to hear some feedback on this one.

Where can I find a pink one for $50?

  12. Apparently under some spray paint. Time to start scratching paint off of Musicmasters as you walk by.

For Sale - Squier Musicmaster Vista Tone Bass '97?
Here's a repaint for sale at a decent price, if the owner can figure out how to ship without the case he's got for it. Although not a stock color, I like the CAR but it needs a different pick guard IMO.

Can I be member #72? Here's my sonic blue example, although it actually looks greener than in the photo and the guard has gone a nice creamy colour.
I'm looking for a replacement original pickup as mine has gone open. Anyone out there got one spare?

Nice looking bass. You may have to have the pickup rewound because originals are like hen's teeth to find. I've never seen one for sale.

The pickup died in my Vista MusicMaster as well. I replaced it with a Seymour Duncan because I could not find another Vista pickup.

Lovely bass! If you can't find an original pickup, have a look at Sentell pickups... Jerry Sentell winds several different flavors of Musicmaster pickups and offers rewinds as well. I have one in my '78 Musicmaster and highly recommend him...
