The Squier I find has the feel of a J bass, but the tone is nowhere near as good as the Fender line or other higher-end manufactures. I hear good things about Essex, though. You might want to check out the Essex megathread for more info on them.

If you save up a little cash, you can pick up a fender jazz MIM on eBay for $200 any day of the week. The essex isn't bad bass at all for the price. If you only got $120, then its a good option. I think its noticeably better than the squire jazz. I like my essex jazz pretty good, its just been my bang-around bass, but I'm selling it in a couple weeks here since i just dropped $1100 on a new spector.:D

I bought a $200 bass because it fealt great to me. I then picked up a pair of Bartolinis on ebay and it sounds like a completely different bass now. Pickup swaps are well woth the cost on a low end instrument.

I have the flamed-top version of that bass. I can't remember..maybe it was quilted.(sold it a year ago)

It was a pretty good bass. I used it for a gig and it sounded awesome. Alot of people came up to me and asked where I got it from and my bandmates(who think I'm a lunatic because I keep changing my instruments every 2 weeks) said that it sounds awesome.

My opinion on the bass is that it sounds pretty good considering the price I paid for it. Definitely better than a Squier. If I had a choice of getting a MIM Jazz bass and an SX Jazz bass, I'd definitely pick the SX and change the pickups.

    Cheers
