I've got the Squier P (PJ) of a few years back and it's quite OK, but there's an active Jag on CL and the extra juice knob has me questioning if it's got anything over the passive I might like even more, is there a significant aural difference / upgrade between the two? user reviews are mixed on the Jaguar's sounds, some saying the boost is just more volume without the benefit of greater tone, yet everything I've heard on yt is pretty impressive, maybe not devastating but those who like it tend to really like them for their basic vintage tones and of course more of that should be good. at a buck and a half I'm tempted to jump, I do like the Jag's look, but am trying not to GAS on a pointless purchase and I figure there should be a definitive tb consensus by now. for the same price I can get a new Bronco at GC, am I best to let it be or are they too good to pass up?
I'm also wondering if they use the same PUs? my PJ is a later version without the Duncans.

  5. I've got no wisdom to offer on the Jag since I've never played one, but to me personally the key question would be whether it would fit your sonic needs better than your current PJ.

My experience has been that inexpensive active basses tend to lag behind their passive counterparts, although I know many would disagree.

I'd save my pennies for something completely different from the basses already in the stable, but that's me.

    My $0.02 only...

thx for the sympathy reply, aj! lol seems we think similarly on many bass topics.
in fact I've heard that bypassing the circuit straight to the jack was a big improvement, even gave it a better low end, which kinda shocked me. so far my experience with battery pres is not that good, my passives and passive-pres are overall superior and this Jag is dead without a battery, that sucks. but they do have their fan base and I'd hate to pass up a locally available sleeper / diamond in the rough if it stood out from my stable. I have pressing priorities so I truly appreciate your common sense take and should ignore the GAS, plus my needs are fully covered and no matter what this Jag isn't going to do for me what a grand old mudbucked Gibson will for my dreams, ears, and ego. it doesn't look like the Jag Club is going to stand up for their own so maybe all things will pass...

  7. I have a VM Jaguar and to be honest I really just leave that Bass Boost knob turned all the way down. In a band setting I get all the tone control I need from the P and J volume knobs and the standard tone knob.
The Bass Boost knob is pretty useless IMO.

In case somebody is researching this older thread, I find the bass boost useful on lower powered amps to fill in the bottom a bit. How low powered? I use a Rumble 25 with an 8" speaker and it makes a positive tone difference. I play with amplified acoustic groups, no drummers. My larger amps , it is true, don't require thw boost. The Jag bass itself is great, more P than J with that silly '60s modern look.
