Hey Fellow Bass players! I just got a very cool Squier VM Jazz 70's bass (3 Tone Sunburst, Maple board, with black blocks & bindings). It's got stock everything (Duncan Designed PUs).... I'm digging it very much but am so used to 60's jazz pick ups (Fender, and Aguilar). These Duncans are louder and different in ways that are hard to describe. I'm liking them but think I'll experiment with other pickups. Ones that may be more "natural" or like the 60's era pickups... Q: What pick ups did you mod up (or sideways) to ? Thanks, and hope you all have a great New Year and 2015!! Cheers!
I've just upgraded the pickups in my MIM Jazz bass to the cs 60's pickups. I'm happy with them. Sound exactly how I like a jazz to sound.
Sounds like we might have similar tastes in Jazz basses. I got a MIM 60's Jazz last year that has become my measuring stick in a way. This Squire is so fun to play though! I might get a set of CS 60's or drop in a set of the AG 4J 60s since I already have a set in my franken Jazz.
I have the post 2013 version of the VM 70s Jazz (with Fender designed pups, not the DDs), and I'm not sure if I'm really missing anything. Just changing the control plate and pots have really opened up my sound. Those mini 250k Alphas seem to sap a bit of their power.
I hadn't heard those pickups/pots and don't know what's in my bass yet, but loudness or power isn't lacking on mine. I'm under the impression that the DD's on my bass are the dominant factor in the combination of things, but I could try out some 250 CTS and an orange drop cap.
You could simply replace them with full size Alpha pots, like I did, and it would make a difference. I did try both a DD and a Fender Designed 70s VM Jazz. The Fender ones are hotter. Way deeper bass response to them as well.
Cool! I hadn't heard the Fenders were deeper, but knowing my AG's are basically 60's PUs they are deeper. I'll definitely consider the full size Alphas, thanks! This neck is so comfortable, however the protective coating is thin (not the glossy one). Knowing me I'll tweak that also (hehe).
Here's a sound demo of the stock pups on my VM: https://www.dropbox.com/s/y9d8osyj9xjhmy1/vapour lock.mp3?dl=0
Recently, I put a set of Classic Vibe pickups into an older Squier Standard Jazz. I wanted to recapture the surprisingly excellent sound I got from a CV-J I had earlier this year. (Wait! It's after midnight! Make that…last year! ) It does sound a little bit better, so maybe I should take a page out of nerkoids book and upgrade to pots to match.
Greetings Y'all. I'm new to the world of Jazz basses. I recently acquired a Squier Classic Vibe 70's Jazz bass and I must say I wasn't impressed with the sound/tone I was getting. I replaced the stock pickups with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound Jazz pickups (both bridge and neck) and I am still not impressed with the sound/tone.
Hey Folks, I did some more searching on the TB bass forms and found other threads that were relevant. Search for "Tricked out Squier Club" Other Squires are in the threads but you can find VM jazzes also.
Not meaning to be a spelling troll, but if you search on "squier" vs "squire" you may get better results. I picked up a VM Jaguar fiver off Craigslist last week and love it. The J pup sounds great but not the P, and will replace it soon.
My VM Jazz with the DD pups had 500k mini pots. I just swapped them out a few days ago for 250k CTS pots. Took off some of the high end zing the bass had with the stockers. Honestly I liked the zing it had, I threw these in b/c I had them laying around and wanted to see if there was a difference. There was, albeit slight. The bass sounds very good as is. And sounded good before. In fact, I did a quick time lapse of the work:
