I was wondering if there is a huge difference between the Squire Affinity P and the Fender Standard P tonewise and overall quality because the squire is around $200 and the standard is around $500
There's a definite tone difference. For one, the Standard P bass is made of Alder, as compared to the unidentified "hardwood body" in the Affinity. Another thing is that the pickups in the Squire are basically, well, cheap pickups. The quality is much better on the Standard Precision and in my opinion, so is the sound. I've played Affinity Jazz basses and my Standard Jazz definitely takes the win in comparison.
I've got a Standard pickup in my Affinity, and it sounds just like what you would expect a P to sound like.
if it's in your budget the standard is better quality overall. to me the biggest difference is in the neck- feel, frets, etc.
So what? That wasn't my point. Ben claimed the wood in an Affinity was some "Unidentified hardwood". It's not, it's identified as Alder.
???? Is there some kind of magic alder out there that Fender uses for their standard model? Some people act like alder is some exotic expensive wood. A $60 alder board yeilded me 4 body blanks. Thats 15 bucks a body. Imagine how cheap Fender gets it buying in bulk.
As per the other thread, it is not the same species alder Fender has used stateside. It is another asian wood also called alder.
There is still no magical properties about American alder that make it some awesome tone wood. Fender uses it because its cheap, is easy to work with, and its tight grained so it finishes well. The same reason I use it on my solid color basses.
I didn't say there was, I was just saying be mindful of wood naming when woods with traditional name sshow up on guitars from Asia. They aren't exporting wood from North American and Europe to Indonesia to make Squiers, they are finding something similar regionally. Edit: did a little reading, seems there is a wood called wuton or wutong from China that is often used in place of, and sometimes even called, alder in the manufacture of guitars and basses.
