Standel Bass Combo amp?

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by gjbassist, Jul 12, 2013.

  1. Anyone know about Standel amps. I had not heard of them. There is one for sale locally that I found. It's a 2x10 combo. Doesn't appear to have a model name other than a name plate with the word "studio" on it. Seller is asking $225 for it.

  2. I had a Standel amp as my first rig back in the early 70s. Not bad for the time, it was two 2-15 cabs with built in 100 watt amps in the back, preamp head. Could keep up with loud drummer and a couple of guitarists with Twin amps.

    Can you post a pic?

Might be fun. Standel wasn't the biggest or best, but they made some fun stuff.

These unit's power amps are set in potting compound—and thus can't be serviced if they experience component failure.

I always liked the Standel SS 2-15 D140 bass amps with powered ext. cabs. Steve Boone of The Lovin' Spoonful used them with a Guild Starfire I, in 1968 in Providence, RI. Tone...hmmm, I'd say somewhat audible, IIRC!

I'd skip it as a combo...but then, I have had half a dozen combos, and pretty much loathed all of them. Get a used PF350 and an avatar 8 ohm 210. Add another identical 210 when you have more money saved.

Steve Boone...my pal! We do shows with the Spoonful occasionally, and I love Steve! Great guy whom a lot of people don't realize wrote or co-wrote many of their best tunes.

I have an ancient Standel tube guitar head kicking around here, but it came to me in rough shape and has taken on a different life of its own over the years.

Studio would be the model. Probably a SS guitar amp from the 60s. That price seems in the right ballpark, but I don't follow that market enough to really know.

They were high-quality amps in their day. Still a few in use today, mostly by guitar and steel players who don't need a lot of power.

The power amps weren't potted; that was the preamp and tremolo modules in the SS amps. The module schematics are now published on Standel's site, so they're serviceable again.

  8. Don't walk ..run to buy it it is a bit of vintage amp history and that price is low for a working Standel amp. In the day they were way more expensive than a comparable Fender etc. As well as better made with top notch components.

I own (and still gig occasionally) a Standel artist 15 combo. I stuck a JBL in it squeeze the most out of its 60 or so watts.

It sounds pretty good for an old SS rig, but doesn't play nice with pedals in front of it.

I will say this - it's built like a tank.

Oh man, great memories. I also had the the 215 combo. Paired w/a Ric 2005 it was the best sounding rig I've ever had, and loud. I was an idiot for getting rid of either of them! Talk about built tough? I dropped it down a full flight of stairs once. It did a complete flip on the way down, and slammed into the wall at the bottom. The only damage was to the wall! If that combo has the JBL's and everything works, snap it up fo' sure!

I had the 2x15 combo years ago. The amp always had issues.

Yeah, it was an upscale amp line, built for working pros. Standel was the first MI company to use JBL speakers, and they continued to use JBL speakers (particularly D130s) through the life of the company.

  14. Thanks for the info. Here are a couple of not so good photos the seller sent me. I'm hoping to go look at it tomorrow.

I do believe that says, "Solid State Amplifier" above the on/off switch.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

  16. Got some info from the seller. Said one of the speakers had a tear in it so he replaced it with a speaker from a Behringrer combo. Also said it was making a buzzing sound. I thinking I'm gonna pass on it.
