Standing Waves

  1. What exactly are standing waves and how do they effect the sound coming out of the cabinet? How can they best be eliminated?

    Someone else can probably explain it a little more scientifically, but standing waves are waves that in effect, are standing still. The soundwave in the cabinet, due to design or other factors, becomes stationary and there is typically no energy propagation and hence, little to no sound produced. You can eliminate standing waves in a closed cabinet by adding baffling material, and in a ported cabinet by tuning it correctly...
     
  3. When you get 2 sources of waves (sound) they will add to each other. There is a pattern of points where the -ve of one wave will always cancel out the +ve of the wave from the other point - so the sound at these points basically cancels itself out.

    Standing waves are resonances that can arise within the cabinet when an internal dimension is at least 1/2 wavelength long. Lining the cab with damping material will absorb these waves above 300 Hz or so. Below 300 Hz they're controlled by breaking the cab up into smaller compartments. OTOH if the cab isn't broken up into smaller compartments serious resonances can occur, as 1/2 wavelength at 250 Hz, for instance, is only 2.25 feet.
