I knew of 2 or 3 prototypes, but NEVER thought I would ever see one.
Natural finish...all Maple. Beautifully matched 2 pc top and back and VERY FLAMEY ribbon curl sides.
The original bridge was replaced by a Badass...but the string ferrules were still there for the string-through-body of the original set-up.
    The mutes were missing
It had 2 Fender bass Humbuckers with offset polepieces.
Peghead was Starcaster shape with only "Fender" on it.
The neck was very thin, with a definate "V" shape to the back
I stood there with my jaw on the floor.
Here is a Sunburst Starcaster bass....

I remember reading about the Starcaster in Guitar Player (before Bass Player was around) in Teisco Del Rey's column. He also showed a pic of the Starcaster Bass. Kinda hip with that offset hollow body, eh?

The link to the pic is of a scan from that column many years ago. I am still wide-eyed about seeing that Bass. I have EMailed Gene Fields, who was with Fender for many years and designed the Starcaster. I will keep you posted!!
