Been humming and hawing about this for a while. Looking for song suggestions (I have a list I've started) and things to look out for in starting a tribute band. Up until now I've done cover bands, original bands, etc. this will be my first foray into semi-tribute (ie tribute to an era/genre).

Alternative is fairly broad (especially in the 90's). You got your Grunge/Noise Rock, your Soft rock alternative bands, your alternative metal (NU-Metal/Rock), your hippie rock, Pop-Punk, etc, etc, etc. Ideas, suggestions, etc from the bass brotherhood?

Come at me my bass bros!

  5. One really cool tune from the Nu-Metal era - Poem by the band Taproot. Killer groove, great vocal. Love that song - I'd love to find guys that liked to play that type of music around here....

    Sounds like a fun project.

Just DO NOT name the band ANY version of "Generation X", "Genex", "Gen X", etc. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a band with a name like that. It's been done...... WAIT! Song Idea!

There is a ton of great 90's material. Bands in my area that have done strictly 90's alternative have struggled hard (including a band I was in) to get gigs. Which stinks because I really do enjoy the music, especially if I get to play guitar for it.
That said, one idea I had was to do one set of 90's alternative and 2 sets of mixed music. That way there is still some variety.
Also, I played an all 90's benefit show split with my band that did a variety of 90's alternative, a sound garden tribute band, a stone temple pilots tribute band and an Alice In Chains tribute band. The single artist tribute bands said they do pretty well as weekend warriors and get some really good shows. But they do have to travel a bit.
As for what goes over well in my experience.
    Man in a box
    Tomorrow by silverchair
    Seven Mary 3 - Cumbersome
    Candlebox - far behind
    Lenny kravitz - fly away
    Sugar ray - fly
    Zombie - cranberries
    Story of a girl
    My own Worst enemy
Pretty much the more mainstream radio hits of the day.
