    4 strings are DGCF and CGCF (usually retune rather than change instruments).
    The 5 is ADGCF.

    I recently realised the benefits of C E A D G, my band's six stringers play in drop C tuning and having the open C string makes some things a lot easier and reduces the strain on my wrist in some songs.

    I've always dug the sound of 1/2 step down tuning, but rarely do I bother doing it for myself.

    I also have a doubleneck bass with a neck tuned E A D G but to be honest I can barely play in that tuning anymore - I get lost. And the infamous Krappy tripleneck - the one-string neck is tuned E, the two-string B E and the three-string C G D.
