Steady Clicking sound when I use amp DI out to mixer?

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by rtslinger, Jun 17, 2019.

  1. Hello people, maybe some one has had this happen? I have a Peavey Max112 that has a onboard Di out.
Yesterday when I ran the line out to the mixing board I got a audible repeating clicking sound coming from the PA?

I swapped out the cable same issue.
I plugged a mic into the line coming out of the DI from the amp and it worked fine?
I have use this DI out to the mixer a million times and never experience this before?
I the changed grounding on the amp didn't help, I also plugged into a different wall outlet same results?
Stumped hopefully you people can help
    thanks Rob

I've heard something kind of like this (maybe more like a chirp than a click) coming from cell-phone interference before... is it possible that that or some other electronic device is causing it?

  4. Hmmm, I will test these two theories tonight I had both my cellphone and my laptop charging in that location.
If it doesn't turn out to be either, I will recorded that sound and post it.
    thanks for the help

Line out and DI are different beasts on most amps. Was the noise coming through the line out, but not the DI?

Dont know for sure what that would indicate but clarifying that may help someone troubleshoot with you.

  6. I ran the Di bass driver and it made the same noise not using the Amp Di??!

  7. But the fender Rumble doesn’t have this issue

Ok, that's not a clicking sound... so we are making progress.

How is the mixer powered? This sounds very much like either a serious ground loop (which can't occur with a mic) or a miswired AC power receptacle with bad leakage into the ground. It could also be something within the mixer/amp.

I doubt very much that there is a problem with your Peavey amp. The very first thing I would try is a different mixer-amp, and I would also get yourself an outlet tester and see if there are any obvious faults.

The reason the noise is less with the 20dB pad on is because there is 20dB less gain (which is 100 times more power than 0dB).

Whoa - that's a good deal worse than I'd imagined. I'm afraid that I have no technical expertise to offer you. Please keep us posted on what you try and your progress towards a resolution.

Do you know if this ourlet was on a different circuit? Either way, checking the power as Andy suggested seems a good idea.

  11. okay but why doesn't it do it with the Fender Rumble? is the grounding different everything is plugged into the Furman power conditioner? And to mention again I have used this setup in my music room a million times this came out of the blue?

No expert, but maybe you need to be using the -20db setting for the active bass?

Not all DI's are = so the amp to amp comp isn't really valid. Maybe try turning your bass volume knob all the way down and try it - if the noise goes away, but pops up as you increase volume, you may just be sending too much signal to the PA.

    Just some ideas....

DI circuits are different between products, some are more sensitive to wiring issues than others. It's also possible that it's damaged.

I have a Peavey MiniMax, and while I did not have that sound in the video, there was one particular venue where I got noise running the DI through the PA. This is the same venue I had issues with my Darkglass Vintage and B7k. I told the owner he had faulty power, because neither of these devices had that sort of noise anywhere else. I, of course, got chastised by the owner, but I knew that was the only explanation. These were two different gigs at the same place. I swapped out the amp, no problem the rest of the gig. I swapped out to use my Zoom MS60-B only, no problem. I am pretty sure he had a grounding issue of some sort.
