I have a steinbeberger spirit bass 5-string laying around that I don't really use any more.. the reason being is I just always got a fairly flat sound from them... Does anyone know what pups could fit into this bass? i am thinking about getting either seymour duncan or EMGs... just to have as another backup bass or somethin..thanks,

    Jim

Steinberger (mostly) originally used EMG active pickups, which are totally different than the "EMG Select" passive pickups that are in your Spirit.

This is what EMG has to say about replacing your pickups:

I have it easier - my XT-2 Spirits use the same size rout as the originals, so EMG-HBs drop in.

Go get yourself a new, small (1"), SHARP wood chisel and a sharpening stone. You'll be amazed what you can do with one using simple hand pressure (no hammering)! I don't think routing would be needed...

I take it you've done your own pickups for you steiny? hmm.. i may just do that... its a backup bass anyway.. if i mess up a little it won't hurt my feelings.. but i do hate to damage basses

Which Spirit do you have - a bolt neck or a neckthrough? And what finish (makes a difference for touchup)?

I have the XZ-25 bolt on 5-string with a tobacco burst finish.. What kind of pickups and/or preamp do you suggest. did you just put 2 other passive pickups or did you go active?

    Mine's an XT-4, so EMG-HBs were a drop-in. It's not done yet - I'm still looking for a cheap EMG-BTC tone circuit.
