This may seem like a moronic question, but do stereo heads or preamps create a stereo effect with the sound, or does stereo just mean output to two separate cabs through two separate power channels?
  2. Output is to two cabs from two different independant signals. It will still be mono.

However, if you use a stereo effects unit, then the left/right out of the effects will go to those two channels. Then you will have stereo.

The term dual mono is more accurate.
