So I’ve had my MM Stingray for years and love it. But decided to get an MM Sterling too because of the slimmer neck. I picked one up second had for a steal. I’ve been playing it for a few months but I’m starting to question its authenticity...

MM claim the Sterling is lighter than the Stingray. But my Sterling really is noticeably heavier, like a lot heavier!

Also I’ve noticed the paint cracking at the back by the neck plate and it’s cracked like a bit of cheap plastic would. Doesn’t look like a decent laqur job...

It also doesn’t seem to play as well as the Stingray. The Stingray is effortless the Sterling needs a bit of a wrestle.

My Sterling has the ‘Made is San Luis’ etc on the back and has the routed curve bit on where the neck joins. It has the Musicman bridge and but but I’m becoming sceptical.

    Anyone have any ideas...

    Thanks.

  2. Post photos, if the tuners and bridge are stamped musicman into the metal then it’s really likely legit. The Chinese fakes are awful and never have details such as that. Also the paint chipping as you described I have had happen on 3 musicmans and seen it on other ones in person and online, they were all 1998-2002 era. Something about the paint then.

I second the pictures, it should be pretty obvious. As far as the paint goes, it isn't lacquer. It is poly and would break off like cheap plastic would.

All of the above. As for playability, how is the setup? I bought a used bass recently that needed the truss rod reset. It plays well now, but didn't before. My Sterling is the nicest playing bass I've ever owned but I suppose there might be some out there that are not as nice. Mine is also quite heavy.

Yeah, musicman is stamped on both the tuners and the bridge. And it is an older one so I guess that paint makes sense.

The set up isn’t great. The trussrod needs doing I’m sure.

I was mostly concerned about the weight. It’s sooo heavy. With the Stingray in one hand the Sterling in the other its a crazy difference. With MM claiming the Sterling to be lighter that’s when I first had doubts.

    Perhaps I should stop worrying.

    Thanks for your advice!

    It’s genuine.
    You’re overreacting.
Weight varies. You got a heavy one
Get it set up properly . It will play great.
    Enjoy!

    Haha! Thanks guys.

Perhaps a large padded strap is in order then

  9. Yep real. If you dont like it and like the stingray then I would just sell it, I dont fight a bass I dont like it just gets the boot. If you got a great deal it should be easy to flip. I sold a much more worn/beat black one without a case last month for $700.

The real deal... Sterlings are awesome. I had a heavy one too... I concur that it just needs a good setup. :)

I've had two Sterlings. That's real for sure. I now have a Stingray because I like the tone a wee bit more.
