He is the reason I play Fretless six string. I had a chance to meet him in 1996 and get his autograph and talk with him. He is super nice, what a great person and player. He jammed with
Victor and Otiel played drums, then victor & otiel switched places. It was the best thing I have ever seen as far as bass players go.
I have 2 of his Videos, Bass Extremes and
one on Fretless Bass, where he plays a six string ABG. He has a signiture Bass by Aria I saw one for sale at new jersey Bass & guitar not to long ago.:)

Yeah, if you like his stuff with VLW, definitely get Bass Extremes I and II. (Just Add Water and Cookbook).

  6. I watched the video "The day the basses took over the world" and say Victor Wooten, Victor Bailey, Steve Bailey, Bill Dickens (I think Otiel Burbridge) and others BLOW ME AWAY! I had hair before I watched it - have been bald ever since...

Then I got to see Victor W and Steve Bailey at a clinic, up-close and personal - again, blown away!

Just last night I was cruising Youtube and searched on Steve Bailey - and again... blown away!!! Steve Bailey is a MASTER! simply amazing what he can do with that 6-string fretless! Amazing beyond amazing... He has flawless technique and his lines are simply astounding!

Finally, I think... I am not sure, but I think I saw Steve Bailey when I was 15 (23 years ago) playing upright with Dizzy Gillespie at a small concert at UMSL... I think it was Steve on upright but I had no idea who he was at the time. Only that I never in a million years thought you could do THAT on an upright!

    Steve Bailey is simply amazing...

  7. yep, Steve played with Diz. he's got some great road stories, too!

    :D

  8. I had no clue who that short, long-haired white dude was... but when he went... man did he go! I was pinned to my chair! I was a brand-new bass player, playing in the high school orchestra and had yet to get into the jazz band or even a rock band at the time. I had no idea that you could play an upright the way he did...

Years later, when I saw the clinic, I remembered the Dizzy concert and was rather sure it was the same dude. Doesn't surprise me one bit. He has been amazing for many, many years, hasn't he? And yet, he still looks quite youthful... must be that nice beach living he does... :)

  9. Haha, yeah, I loved the one about him taking Dizzie's 1st class airplane food. :D

Steve's a killer bassist and a great guy. 'nuff said.

  10. have you heard about the night that Diz gave Steve the nickname Machine Gun? Steve was so proub of himself until he realized that it wasn't a compliment!

  11. Can you elaborate? Or should we start calling you 'half-start'? ;)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love Steve Bailey! Brilliant player, has a great feel for the fretless and great tone (but I've heard disagreements about that one)!

He's amazing on his own, but when he plays with Victor...well, mountains move!

  13. I haven't heard that one, but I loved the one where he flipped his car on his hand on the way to a gig in Phoenix. "That son of a bitch tried to take a bass solo "

I'd love to go and see Steve play, and maybe learn a bit from him too! Unfortunatley, all these great things, like Bass at the Beach, Bass Nature Camp, Bass Boot Camp, I can't go to because of my location! Getting there would cost a bomb!

  17. We had a guy from Ireland at Bass Nature Camp this year. Location is no excuse! :p

  19. you're not the only one, man. unless I was hired as a teacher (not going to happen) or unless I win the lottery, my contact with Steve will be through email!

So far at Bass At The Beach we've had guys from England, Mexico, Australia, Barbados, Israel, Canada, and all over the US. It may not be a cheap trip....but I gaurantee that the week will be worth more than $$$! It would be cool to see some of you there!

    Aloha, Garey
