Steve Swallow on acoustic with Monk

Discussion in 'Recordings [DB]' started by bassbrad, Aug 21, 2007.

  1. Just out today in the US Thelonious Monk Quartet "Live at the 1964 Monterrey Jazz Festival" with Charlie Rouse, Ben Riley and Steve Swallow on acoustic bass. Steve's bass playing is amazing considering the situation, you'll just have to read the liner notes.

I'll definitely be checking that out. I love Swallow's acoustic work from the early 60's, especially with the Jimmy Giuffre 3 w/ Paul Bley. Amazing group, and Swallow just kills it.

Wow, this sounds interesting... There's also a bootleg that's been floating around recently of Dave Holland with Monk in the 70s.

Got the record from Mosaic. Great tone and feel and Steve gets plenty of solo space.
