I called on an ad for a Stingray 5.The guy said he bought the bass new in 78(as a 4 string) and later took it to G&L and had it converted to a Five.He also said that all they did was change the nut, bridge and pickup. Is this possible using the same neck?Wouldn't the spacing be a little tight?Opinions?(oh yeah, he only wants $300 for it)

It's possible, but it ruined the bass IMO.
The spacing will be incredibly tight.

Take a look at it and try to get the original pickup, nut and bridge, maybe you can undo the mod.

What about the extra tuning key?

I don't know what replacement necks are available for Stingrays, but if you get the original bridge, pickup and nut with the bass for $300, it might be worth looking into replacement necks.

    Peace,
