Around new year I'll be getting a Musicman StingRay 5! The idea of having the piezo bridge included is tempting... but one question! why is the piezo bridge pickup there and what are its tonal characteristics? (thats 2 questions, but hey!!!)
    Thanks!

Are you getting a fretted or fretless?

I love the tone that I got from a Sterling fretles with the piezo, but Im not sure how it would benifit the sound for a fretted.

Versatility and extra options are never bad.

On a fretless, a piezo can add a certain 'woody', 'acoustic' quality that is hard to get from magnetics.

On a fretted, unless you have exemplary technique, it can add a lot of finger, string and fret noise.

If it were me, I would not pay extra for the piezo on a fretted.

  8. I would say go for the piezo. I've heard that it does sound good, even with frets. I've played an Ibanez EDA900, and the piezos sound awesome in that. If you don't like it, you can always turn them down. It'll probably increase the resale value, too.
