Ok, somehow I ended up with a late 90's Stingray for $400 with the OHSC! The neck is straight, truss rod works, there is a bit fret wear and the finish is got a big ding near the controls and some cracks and the other thing is that the preamp seems to be shot, but it sounds pretty good in passive mode! Ok so here is my problem there are no repair shops where I live the only thing would be to drive an hour to Tucson to drop the bass at a repair shop and have them perform a good setup, but I really can't afford that right now, also I can't justify keeping the bass because I am not in a band or anything like that right now, and I don't even have an amp! The only thing I have is a korg headphone amp. I was thinking about sanding the body and refinish it in white, because I think the trans teal it's fugly and white looks hot with a maple fretboad, or may be listing the bass on craigslist and pass the deal to other person who would put the bass to good use?
I doubt the preamp is 'shot'. You should look into that further. Pop a new battery in there, check the connections. What do you mean by 'passive' mode?
I did put a new battery and checked the connections and everything seems to be in place, but the knobs seems to do nothing and by passive mode I just mean the sound that comes from the bass without the battery.
There is no passive mode on a Musicman. Unless its been modified, I don't think it should even make sound without the battery...I would just resell it if you're not excited to keep it- you could probably make a little money on it and buy a decent working bass that you like the color of. Karl
Don't refinish it- especially if you just want to sell it. The buyer would probably prefer it in orig. condition no matter how dinged up it is. A decent paint job is a pretty involved process and would ideally require the use of a properly set up spray booth.
Unless it has been modified, there is no passive mode on a Stingray. That is a great price, even for a bass with a few dings. Keep it and get it looked at when you can. You likely won't find another good deal like that and you owe it to yourself to at least hear and play it after a good setup and tune-up. I wouldn't refinish it either. To get it professionally done, it would likely cost you as much as you paid. Plus, the trans teal is a great colour and finish! Is it possible that it's a S.U.B.?
Isn't the pickup of Stingray passive? The battery just powers up the preamp, so the sound I get would be just from the pickup, right?
The preamps on early stingrays were gooped up. You need to get in touch with someone who knows the elecs on it. By "Gooped Up", I mean Leo masked the wiring by design. Have someone familiar with early Leo MM take a look at the pre....despite what anyone says here.
It's a 3 band preamp. Is not a SUB, it's got the serial number stamped in the bridge, and the finish is not the textured one used in SUB's.
I've decided to sell it, there is no sense in keeping it if I am not going to play it. I will just pass the good deal to someone else, thats why I listed it on Craigslist.
was just posted and in Tucson, seems highly unlikely that it's a coincidence. I wouldn't buy from someone that blatantly dishonest who is also trying to get around being a supporting member and selling stuff on here - might as well send your money to nigeria.
And i'm the prince of nigeria, can I have your bank account number? ha chances are it's probably legit, but with the ease of burning people in online transactions, i tend to avoid anything that is even slightly offputting.
