I had a '76 Stingray that sounded to me, better than any Stingray I've ever heard. I thought that I had heard that someone in the UK was making a preamp that sounded like the original. Or maybe someone else?

John East? Pricey, but what I've read they sound very good.

Really any MM 2 band preamp will get the sound you're after.
But the first couple of years of the StingRay had pickups with much longer pole pieces, like 40% longer, and it was also wound to a different resistance spec than the late 78 and later pickups.
