Strange looking bass/guitar

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Cambass, Apr 8, 2004.

  1. Greetings all, I'm looking for information on a peculiar instrument that I recently spotted. I saw Peter Gifford from Midnight Oil using it during their 1985 "Oils On The Water" concert (just released on DVD BTW). It looks like it had 5 bass strings on top and guitar strings on the bottom but both on the same neck.

I'm sure I saw this somewhere else as well, does anyone know what this instrument is? (I don't have any pictures, sorry)
  2. was it a chapman stick???
  3. wow those videos were cool! he was playing basslines and guitar lines at the same time.
  4. One plays this instrument by touch. tapping if you will, and since there is no need for fretting, both hands are free...almost infinite possibilities with it. The action is supra-low, and the p'up is super sensitive. Very piano like quality to the tone.

Ever see Blue Man Group? Or Tony Levin in King Crimson? Both very prominent stick players.
