Strange pickup problem...

My friend has a bass with a P/J configuration, and the P by itself sounds good; so does the Jazz pickup by itself. However, when both volumes are on full, the low end frequencies cancel out completely, and the bass sounds really thin.

Could the pickups be wired out of phase with each other?

Anyone have any ideas as to what might be the problem?

    Is that hard to do?

The only experience I have with messing with wires inside a bass was when I put EMGs in my Ibanez, but that was easy because they came pre wired. All I had to do was solder it onto the input jack.

no its easy. you just need the wiring diagram for that bass, a soldering iron and some solder. Should take you longer to take things apart and put them back together again than to actually re-solder the wires. have fun!

In the past I just backed off one of the pickup volumes slightly and that ususally solved the problem of phase cancellation. YMMV
