So I play a Fender Made In America P-Bass. It's kind of heavy My wife bought me a SLDR strap and I found a way to break it. (somehow managed to tear the strap hole) Does anyone have a recommendation for a heavy duty strap that can stand up to me being a spaz?
Strap locks. Not only will they keep you from flinging your bass across the stage, but they also use washers to clamp down on the strap. This will make that strap hole more durable.
My concern is the weight of the bass somehow widening the hole/tearing it outright. It was always my understanding that all straplocks do is keep the strap from slipping off the hole
All but one of my straps are Levy's and I'm a jumper who had some heavy basses, no significant hole-widening.
They use washers to "squeeeze" the area around the hole in the strap. It's hard to describe, but it it is absolutely true and will absolutely fix your issue. You put strap locks in a $4.00 nylon strap and you will never be able to tear through it.
Find a Leather-smith and have him/her make you a strap out of 10 or 12 ounce hide and then add the strap locks / Schaller locks will work with 12 ounce, but will need compressing. The locks should be re-tightened after 24 hours & should be checked/re-tightened periodically as the leather contracts and expands due to weather/humidity, etc. DO NOT have any slits cut through the holes! A drop of Loctite 242 Medium on the locks' threads is an additional option... Main strap is 12 ounce full grain drum dyed veg-tanned leather and the adjustable end is 9 ounce top grain hand dyed veg-tanned leather, the locks are Schaller.
