are the strings (E and G) supposed to be aligned in the center off the fingerboard (moving the neck around). or is it supposed to be more or less distance for a specific string?

or is this a personal preference thing?

i've been messing with the distances (E closer to the edge, G closer to the edge and equal distance) and i have noticed differences in tone. i think i prefer the E string closer to the edge because it gives it more girth (E and A strings) to the tone. less bite.

    thoughts?

it's really just a preference thing (short of the point of playability issues if one shifts the neck enough that a string keeps rolling off the edge)

there's probably variation in center-to-center vs string edge-to-edge in the same way that some locate nut slots differently

it's interesting that you're getting a noticeable difference in sound with the subtle neck shifting--if you dig it a certain way and it plays well and sets up well, i don't see any reason not to keep it like that:)
