I recently broke an E string. I have a number of old used single strings. I found one which had an E string thickness. Put it on---sounds absolutely great! Both for arco and pizz. Plenty of 'growl' which I like.
Can anybody identify what make the string it is? See photo. The tailpiece winding is orange and the peg-head winding is a dark blue'ish/ Mystery Double Bass String.JPG purple colour. Thanks for your help.

Looks like Pirastro Jazzer, but the peg end should be dark green.

  3. Ditto.
Maybe the dark green turned to dark blue with time?

Had another look at the peg head winding colour--defiantly dark blue'ish / purple colour. Not a hint of green.

It looks and sounds like a Jazzer to me too.

Definitely not a Pirastro jazzer headstock. I'm stumped! The tailpiece end really looks like a Jazzer E though.

I'm not sure what I'm looking at in the headstock. The Navy/Royal windings seem to be to the A-G strings. I'm not sure that I'm seeing the E-String winding.

The tail piece is interesting too. What type of bass is this?
