What steps should I take when putting on new strings to:

    a) help them last longer and
    b) make them sound better

    Thanks a lot.

To help them last longer a good idea is to wipe them down every time you play them. I also read once about this technique Jimi Hendrix use to do where he rub his finger and thumb up the string a certain way, and it helped keep it from breaking.

Making them sound better. Well, I don't know how you would make it sound better. Put different pickups in your bass. :D Seriously, maybe when they start to lose brightness, they'll sound better to you. I don't really know what you mean by that question.
