Does strings gauges 0.65-0.85-1.05-1.30 bring more tension into the bassneck than 0.45-0.65-0.85-1.05 if the strings are the same type/brand
(ie... does a 4 string bass, orginaly str. with Elixir 0.45-0.65-0.85-1.05, get more tension at the neck if you restr. it with Elixir 0.65-0.85-1.05-1.30)

  2. yes, especially if you are tuning both sets to EADG.

    Sorry

Im about to tune the bass B(1.30) E(1.05 A(0.85) D(0.65)

  4. Then I think that the tension will increase, but not nearly as much as if you tried to tune it up to EADG.

    EDIT: I think I'm wrong...maybe

If you are going from EADG to BEAD the tension will decrease.

  6. There you go, I'm wrong again :)

Even if the EADG tuning is with Elixir 0.45-0.65-0.85-1.05
and the BEAD tuning is with Elixir 0.65-0.85-1.05-1.30 ?

The only difference is you have traded a B string for a G string. It takes less tension to bring the B string to pitch than it did for the G string.

It depends on brand and type (core to wrap ratio), but with D'Addario XL a .130 at B0 has 34.5 pounds tension, and a .045 at G2 has 42.8 pounds tension.

That relationship is likely to be about the same for any roundwounds.

Really ought to snag the D'Addario String Tension PDF.
