Need to restring the ol' P. I've been using Fender 8250M's because I like the taperwound E (for string-thru), the heavier guage .110, and the silked ends. They sound pretty decent, but I haven't really tried anything else. (I use Roto Swing 66 nickel rounds on my Ric, so I also appreciate the easy, silky feel of the 8250's!) Is there another string with these features that might sound even better?
If you like the smooth silky feel of 8250s, then the only things I have to suggest would be to try some flats (P basses do seem to thrive on them) or keep on using what you have been. You gotta love those Fender strings. As for the flats, I can't seem to think of any that have taperwound Es, although I am sure somebody must make one.
+1 for flats. labella flats on a P bass for that classic motown/jamerson sound. though i prefer the 760fl's not the jamerson set...
I put a set of Dunlop Nickel Plated Steel strings on my P bass. They've been on for about 5 days and are breaking in real nice. The initial pingy tone (typical of most new strings) is subsiding and the P thump is coming right through. At only $20 for the set, they are worth at least a try.
Mr. McThumpin, After looking at your profile and list of Bass players that inspire you, I would have to say Flatwounds for sure on your P-Bass. I am not the kind of guy that says they have to La Bella's though. I like the Fender Flats and think they are a great string for the price. Any good quality Flatwound will get you into P-Bass bliss.
I was a huge fan of Rotosounds on my Fender P-basses. I now keep Sadowsky blue label strings on my Sadowsky 5-string P-bass.
