Guys, I am 5 stringer, recently got offered a Precision American Pro II V (sunburst) for US $1485 (taxes, shipping, set up included). Kind of a bargain, right? What do you think? I left a poll for your to guide me through. I wanted a 4 strings to give it a try but being a guitarist, I love to have the deep low register available, so I think I will stick to a 5 strings again, plus the sunburst 4 strings Sunburst/tort pickguard is not available in any US shop right now, they are all waiting for Fender and nobody know when they will supply. Would appreciate your advice. Anyways, my main question is: which la Bella Strings should I be looking at to achieve that killer P bass sound? Appreciate if you can post links. The bass is a string through model. Thank you all.
Killer P bass sound: fat, traditional sound of the p bass. I am out of words for this one. I think most of us know what I am referring to. I use labella in my J bass. They sound great, but they came with the bass, not sure what model they are. Remember I am a guitarist transitioning to bass. Don’t ask me much
I rock EB cobalt flats on my 4 string and it's Great! Just so you know though if you are looking for the old school traditional P bass sound you won't get it from this bass it's voiced to be more modern. Anymore to get that sound brand new without changing pickups you have to buy Mexican. Just the options Fender gave it's customer base. I also own the 75th Anniversary P and it has The P Bass sound and is way underrated. I love my AmPro 2 though I think just like a popular band it's good to see them progress with age. I think the sound I get out of it is the next P bass sound.
I mentioned both in my post. The picture you provided looked like the 75th commemorative bass (MIA). That I cannot speak for because I do not own one or have had the pleasure to play one. Just simply making observations based on experience that will hopefully benefit you somehow. If not I can shut up and get back to playing. Lol
Don't expect to put flats on this bass unless you purchase a different bridge. A lesson I recently learned. B string won't fit through the bridge holes...tried two different sets of flats. Flats work totally fine with the 4-string. Obviously.
You need to give examples of the sound you want. Both rounds and flatwounds have been used for classic P-Bass sounds and they're very different.
These will give you the traditional P bass sound you've been hearing for years. I'm not a 5 string player so have never tried them but use the 4 string sets on my Fenders and sometimes Gibsons, they even sound good on a Ric. You most likely also have these on your Jazz.
La Bella DTF - stainless and the tapes mainly has that problem and they sell a flat that has addresses that problem. 760FS-TB Deep Talkin' Bass Flats - Standard 45-105, Thru-Body | La Bella Strings Also the Low tension flats can go through body I bought GHS precision flats for my through body and those are comparable to La Bella Flats in sound and I heard in longevity. They do not need a break in like La Bellas. And if the holes are too tight get their light gauge. Sounds full like the regular gauge but I raise the action some.
I put flats on my 2016 American Standard V and did not have to replace the bridge... I did replace the B saddle, though. Interesting.
For reference, the two sets of flats I tried were d'addario regular light chromes and EB cobalt flats. Both got so stuck I couldn't even salvage them and cut them out. Got plenty of 4 strings to use the rest of the strings for at least.
