Strings that sound like an upright?

Discussion in 'Strings [BG]' started by Zoroaster03, Mar 22, 2003.

  1. I know this has been posted before, but I would still like to know about the stings that sound like an upright. Hoping to get a Fender Jazz one day, so what kind of strings would be best for Jazz gigs? I know one would have to move up to an upright one day, but for now (while I want for a teacher to show their face) I'm sticking to my axe.

    Any suggestions?

Rotosound 88 tapewounds. They're not as bright as the LaBella tapes, and they're very thumpy and thuddy. Strong attack, quick decay, kind of URB-ish. All IME, of course, YMMV, etc.

  3. Somehow a Jazz doesn't seem right to me for this tone.

For thump and the upright sound, I'd put flats on a Precision bass.

Fender 9050, TI Jazz, DA Chrome Flats.
