Why do they shout "Hup Hup" and/or "Pick it up" in every song? Is there a history behind this or what?

I always figured since ska is so much more musical than lyrical, all the 'pickitups' and 'hups' were just so the listeners didn't forget about the singer.

  3. actually, it's "hep" (as far as I know). don't know the history; i figure its just a ska version of what "oi" is for punkers. it's just like "hey" or "yeah".
ska kids also use it as an adjective, like "chill".
ex: on my friend's site, she says: "a really hep photo page"

ska was created for dancing, im pretty sure 'pick it up' is in reference to the dancing. kinda like, lets get this party started.

the hepcats were a decent ska band though...
  5. usualy when I used hep or pick it up in a song, its when
    a) i have nothing else to sing about and hate saying oooh or yeah or baby baby
    b) theres an actuall pick up in the song
c)theres nothing but repitionion in the song
    d) i know we're screwing up so maybe they'll listen to me rather than the guitars for a second.
or just because its seemingly appropriet, but i ahve no idea where thsi came from. that actually is a good question!
  6. every genre has their meaningless syllables. rock has "yeah yeah yeah" and hip hop modifies it to "uh-huh, yeah" or possibly "what, what."

This was my guess... but the hep hep, pick it up seems like an odd choice of things to say, that's why I guessed there would be some odd history.
