I just got a submarine by electronix from a TB'r. It works but the volume knob does not boost the volume at all. It can only equal the bypass volume when turned all the way up. I thought this pedal could also act as a boost. Am i wrong?

  2. hey, you're not wrong, it should be quite a hefty boost!
Os from Music ElectroniX posts on here and he's great, he should be able to help you out.

    Got a picture?
I think only the newer versions could boost the signal.
Did you get it new or used?

    edit:
Duh, I just read you got it used.
What does the small print at the bottom say?

  5. Os is recovering from the visit of Hurricane IKE so he might be a bit slow getting back to you! You should get substantial boost for the Submarine, mine never goes past noon even for basses that need boost.
How are you powering it and how fresh is the battery?

My bet is on the battery.

Okay, here is some more info:

It is used and old, with the green pickle style submarine graphic.

    Green Led.

No battery, but powered with a one spot.

So maybe the old ones did not boost?

The old ones didn't do boost.
The ones that do have Mk2 printed at the bottom, on the front...
at least if my memory serves. I'm still looking into this.

thanks guys. So there is nothing wrong with my pedal, it is just an earlier version that does not do the boost. No biggie. The pickle graphic is well worth it!

    Cool!
Don't turn it on, the LED will fry your camera.

Oh, didn't catch this on time.. Most of the people here is correct sir. Yes, the earliest versions of Submarine (maybe the first 20 or so) didn't have boost. The gain was at unity regardless of the input signal. It was more of a tool to have instant active bass with tone shaping abilities then an outboard preamp that could drive a power amp. However, the gain increase was introduced way before the MK2 or MK3. I would say most of the "cucumber" submarines have the gain boost.

To the op: Needless to say, I can mod it for free to your liking (boost - no boost - some boost). Just shoot a PM to my way.

Actually for the last 6-7 months, we have been shipping Submarine MK3. Just didn't update the pictures. It has cool Submarine logo between the jacks and doesn't say MK3 on the pedal.

    Version history:

    MK2:

    - reduced pop noise of the mechanical footswitch
    - power supply filter added to the original design, allow it to be compatible with unregulated power supplies as well as regulated ones in terms of background noise

    MK3:

    - updated graphics
    - slight modification to the first gain stage, allow it to tolerate hotter inputs, such as higher output active basses
    - cap brand had changed
