I like these Rotosounds but have liked the Elixirs Stainless Roundwounds. I can't seem to warm up to Flatts. I tried a set of Steve Harris , but it didn't work for me. The rounds seem to have a longer life for me. I am into blues and late 60s to mid 70s rock. I bought a used fretless Jazz Bass today and it is coming with flats. If I don't like them , I will put these Elixirs on there.
which are not usual flats, but are rough and heavy. if you want to try flats, maybe you should try D'Addario Chromes or GHS Precision flats, or Labella Deep Talking. mostly played with flats rounds sound bright, flats don't. flats keep their tone and intonation forever, rounds have a lifespan of at least some months before they start to lose intonation (not tuning!) and sounding dead. let us know and in particular, post a picture to understand which flats you have on.
My favorite bassists are John Enwhistle and Chris Squire who were using Rotosounds, right ? But also Andy Fraiser, Jack Bruce, Berry Oakley, Ed King, Martin Turner,Paul McCartney and Duck Dunn. To name a few.
McCartney and Donald Dunn have never used rounds: McCartney used to play with Maxima strings on his Rickenbacker (they were the stock strings on Ricks on those days) and Pyramid/Hofner on his Hofner. now that Maxima don't exist anymore, he uses Thomastik flats on the Rick. still Pyramid flats on the Hofner. Donald Dunn have always used Labella 52-110 flats since the Staxx days.
I would certainly hope not any kind of flatwound. That would be like my son putting flatwounds on his Dingwall Combustion.
Not 100% accurate. Duck wasn't against throwing a set of rounds on here and there. According to Rob Bowman in Soulsville, USA, Duck even used rounds on Hip Hug-Her.
