I currently have two heads that are on the opposite spectrum of each other, a GK MB500 and a Mesa Prodigy. I'm happy with them both but GAS has me looking for a lightweight class D amp that would be the best of both worlds - the sheen of the MB but one that can get warm when I need it. Would the Genzler 800 fit that bill? I have also thought about the MB800 Fusion but have heard that the tube pre doesn't make that much of a difference. I use a Revsound 2x10 or a Berg CN212 with my two current amps and I play anything from 50's to today classic rock, RB, soul, today's hits. No heavy stuff. thx - Mike
Have a look at the Fender Rumble 500 head. Great tone and more volume than you'll ever need. If you want more info, check the Fender Rumble Club thread in the amps and cabs forum.
Sorry but a Fender Rumble would be a huge downgrade from the amps you already have. The Genzler is a fantastic amp and would be a great choice. The Mesa D800 would also be top notch but of course would be more Mesa sounding. It does not have that 'gank' of a GK. I think you're on the right track with the Genzler, thanks to its endless tone shaping options. Jason at www.bassstringsonline.com will get you the best price on a Genzler (or a GK or Aguilar). Another one you can look at is the Darkglass Microtubes 900 which pretty much has endless tone shaping built in and can do about anything.
OP, the TH500 is a great amp and that video gives basically one example of it's possible tone (the Fodera no doubt contributing a lot to the tonal character). Not the best representation of the amp to my ears (though my crappy speakers may have something to do with it).
Just a follow up ....I bought the Magellan here on the tb classifieds and this amp sounds so good through my cn212, I may let the prodigy go and keep the mb500 as a gig backup. As soon as I plugged it in, I was like...holy #%^~%^!!!! It sounds that good!!!
