I would like to know if there are any players in TB that owns 1 of these basses. The bass player for Eric Benet was playing one while they were performing at the St.Lucia Jazz Festival and it sounded damn" good but I would really like to know what do you think of this instrument. What is it that you like or dont like about the bass.
Eric Benet's bass player, Tony Boyet is a badass bassist. When I first saw him I thought he had an old Tobias until I paid attention to the horns of the body. Never had the opportunity to play a Sukop but yeah, Tony Boyet sounds damm good with it.
That's the short and sweet version for me, too. That headstock kills the deal for me. It's a nice enough bass but to overcome that headstock it would have to be phenomenal. I could deal with the pincer style horns, I guess.
I'm tired of that look too (I can deal with it on a used bass but I certainly wouldn't get a new bass built like that). Nowadays it just screams "look at me, I'm a neck through" which really doesn't have the same cache' it had years ago when you couldn't find a neck through for $199 . I prefer full tops.
I don't know how I missed this post. I've had one for a couple of years, and as I've said elsewhere, it is hands down the best playing bass I have EVER picked up. I consider myself an adequate bassist, but I can play stuff on my Sukop I can't duplicate on other basses, and it makes me feel like a good bassist. They have a convex body which matches the curve of the 34" fretboard, and the back is recessed so it fits over belt buckles, beer bellys, etc. They are very mid-voiced with the stock Bart pre-amp, and cut through the mix as good as anything. Balance is superb. Nits: only one, not much tonal variation or tweaking available, at least with flats on it. But plugged into a Fodera 2000 outboard preamp there are more and stronger tones available. It's a shame there aren't more of 'em out there, but they do have that jaw dropping exclusivity thing going (IME). I've never had another bassist see it without comment. And no, this is not a sales pitch, I hope mine doesn't sell, by choice I'd keep it over the Sadowsky.
4 sale: Fbass BN5f, $1,800 MTD 535f, $1,800 Sukop 5f, $1,500 Rob Allen MB-2f $1,500 Sadowsky 5, fretted, $2,400 or Q5 & $ wow, that's some house-cleaning. good luck with the sale. fred
Thanks fred, 5 years of scouring this and other sites, buying and trading, obsessing, daydreaming, and the results are some great basses I'm not playing much, and because of the Elrick and Genesis, I'm almost out of GAS. Sure I get curious now and again, but I'll go days or weeks without going on-line.
don't know why I missed this post either. I have a Sukop 6 string, it is one of the most playable basses I have laid my hands on. I am however putting it for sale as I would like to order a JP 6 string.
how much are you asking for it, and will you deliver to canada? im just curious, but its probably out of my price range
I know this is a old thread that I started but as far as the "skunk stripe(s)that is being used on the bass Ken Smith is still doing it and he certainly is not having a problem selling them.
